Our physical yoga practice (the one you get in yoga studios) was originally created as part of a whole system to help to still the mind, but it has huge physical as well. To surf it helps to have both a present and calm mind as well as a strong and open body. It’s no wonder yoga and surfing are a match made in heaven!
This yoga class has been created to open and strengthen the parts of the body that need to be strong and areas that often get tight when we’re surfing regularly. The practice is also deeply nourishing for our nervous system when we incorporate a full and deliberate breath – and with full lifestyles our nervous systems need all the support it can get!
I’ve deliberately started our first class with some deep belly breathing. This is the type of breathing we want to do throughout the class, particularly when we get a little wobbly in our asanas (poses) or when our muscles are beginning to fatigue. We start by opening up more space in the ribs and belly, before strengthening the lower back and opening up the hips.
Hints and Tips
With a regular yoga practice you’ll begin to see the more subtle shifts in your body, mind and your life. The lessons we learn on our mat help us to navigate our lives with more ease and freedom. Enjoy!
