How to find your happy place

Now that Christmas is a distant memory and with shorter days and lack of sunlight, spending time outside gets more difficult. Summer feels a long way off and you may find that you’re a bit more gloomy than normal – but don’t let the winter blues take hold! Here’s our tips on turning things around and making a bad day good.

If you haven’t even gotten out of bed yet and you already feel like it’s going to be a bad day, take a few deep breaths. Think of all the things that could go right today instead of what could go wrong. Remind yourself that this feeling of doom and gloom doesn’t last forever. You haven’t always felt like this, and you won’t always feel like this.

Everything going wrong? Think about what you can learn from it. Spilled your coffee because you were running? Slow down! Missed your train? It’s ok, you can just get the next one (and learn from it by getting up earlier tomorrow)! Is it raining again? Get on some wellies and go splash in the puddles.

Close your eyes and imagine yourself in your happy place. This will immediately calm you down and make whatever is going wrong easier to bear. Have a bath or shower, make sure the water is nice and warm and you wash with your favourite scents. You’ll get out feeling miles better than when you went in. Bonus if you moisturise with the nice smelling things too. If you get a whiff of the nice scents through the day, it’s likely to help you calm down.

Do some exercise. The serotonin works wonders for your mind and the sweat is good for detoxing your body and your skin. Yoga is one of the best exercises to do, it will lengthen your muscles and increase your strength and flexibility- and op top of that it will help you bring yourself inner peace and balance.

Affirmations, Mantras and Happiness.

There are a lot of ways to improve your mood, an energetic lift if you will. One of these ways is affirmations. For example, if you say you are going to have a bad day out on the waves, then you probably will. This is a negative affirmation. Try turning it around and making it a positive one!

Start positive sentences with I will, I can or I am.

For example:
• I will be catch x amount of waves.
• I will hit that snap off the lip.
• I will have an amazing surf session today.

Affirmations are a way to change the direction of your day. When you speak affirmations to yourself, you empower yourself and put the idea in your head that anything you want to achieve is possible. And really, it is!

On a similar note to that is mantras. A lot of people confuse the two, however mantras don’t have to be an empowering sentence, as affirmations usually are. Mantras can be simple words or sounds, like the much-recognised OM.

For example:
• surf, sun, happiness
• Water, peace, joy
• Beach, surf, clarity

Both affirmations and mantras can be repeated in your head or out loud until you feel better. It is usually best to do this while meditating, each breath is a word and repeated it over and over until you feel in a more relaxed and peaceful headspace.
