Let Your Soul Smile in Sri Lanka

Let Your Soul Smile in Sri Lanka

Life in this modern-day era is hectic and so it’s important to take time-out for you and to reconnect with your body and soul. The ‘Let Your Soul Smile’ retreat in Weligama allows you to do just this through yoga, meditation, dance and surf, all in the middle of the Sri Lankan jungle and a few minutes from Weligama Beach. Here you can relax, reload and get some extra vitamin D before the real winter starts.

Here’s all you need to know about beautiful Weligama from the retreat’s resident yogi Roos Aa…

Roos, where is Weligama Bay?
It’s located in south west Sri Lanka. Weligama is an old fishing village used by local fisherman as it’s a huge sheltered bay which enables the fishing boats to get out to sea, avoiding the huge swells that crash against the headlands either side of Weligama Bay.

So what makes this a good spot for surfing?
The bay is sheltered from winds and is all sand with no reef which makes it a perfect beginner/ intermediate surf spot, complete with slow rolling clean green waves. We have local surf guides on hand for anyone wanting to surf more advanced spots along the coast and we are situated within a 20 mins drive of up to 12 different challenging surf breaks.

Sounds idyllic, so when you’re not surfing, what animals might you see?
There’s a big chance that you’ll get to see monkeys, sea turtles, peacocks, monitor lizards, tropical birds, tropical fish, maybe even a wild elephant.

What are the local people like?
The local people are beautiful and always welcoming with a warm smile. You just need to keep in mind that they will always try to overcharge tourists a bit, so you need to have a clear idea of what the average prices are, especially for the tuktuk taxis (we can help with this).

What’s the weather like?
The year round climate is tropical with the odd rainy day. October and November is when the season on the SW of Sri Lanka begins and marks the end of the rainy season so it’s a good time to go.

Any local foods you would like to recommend?
The local cuisine is world famous for being green and clean. Fresh fish from the Indian Ocean, veggie based curries cooked with coconut milk and delicious fresh fruit breakfasts. Also Sri Lankan street food hoppers are amazing – the Rotti is too good to be true! At the retreat we offer the people to chose to eat plant based, by eating non processed healthy fresh vegan food (lots of vegetables, fruit, nuts, seeds, etc)

What level of surfer does the retreat and Weligama Bay lend itself to?
The waves here mean it’s perfect for beginner to intermediate level of surfer.

What’s the top three things you’d recommend to do whilst in Weligama?
1. Go for a sunrise surf in the bay
2. Try the amazing local street food
3. Visit our local Buddhist temple
