"The wave is your stage and the sun is a spotlight" check out these inspirational videos which bring together Steph with New York City Dancers.

The Water Dancer, features a series of short videos exploring the similarities between surfing and dancing, involving Quiksilver brand ambassador and 4X ASP World Champion Stephanie Gilmore and three professional New York dancers.

Stephanie went to New York for the project, where she met with the dancers skilled in ballet, hip-hop and commercial dance. The women discussed the creativity, elegance and audacity of surfing as it relates to the splendor, power and beauty of dance. Stephanie sought to capture the dancers’ unique culture, breathtaking talent and exciting stories, while demonstrating the relationship between the art of dance and the sport of surfing.

“Quiksilver and I created this concept to shed light on the way surfing is described, in a way that truly shows how beautiful female surfing is,” said Gilmore. “I once read that surfing a wave can be described as a dance performance: ‘The wave is your stage and the sun is a spotlight.’ I like to think surfing and dance have similar qualities like power, grace, improvisation, rhythm and most of all, performance. When I’m competing, the majority of my drive comes from the performance. When I’m surfing I want to be powerful, but perform with style and grace, similar to that of a dancer.” Thus where the idea came to light.

Famed choreographer Noemie LaFrance is one of the three dancers profiled in the video series. Hersensitivity to environment, muscle memory and improvisation were just a few of the many things that deemed Noemiea fascinating interview subject. She related her dancing to the way Stephanie rides a wave: both women understand the languages of the body and how far one can push their body. “It’s a constant adaptation,” Noemie said. “…a lot of times what is ‘improv’ is what is most natural and beautiful.” Each goes into their ‘dance’ with extreme structure and planning, but the two women connected on the need to let go and let the music or the wave take over.

Tiler Peck, the second dancer to take part in the series, is a determined and graceful New York City ballet principal. Very young for her level of success, the two women connected instantly on their early achievements and their being ‘thrown into’ a world of early stardom. Both Stephanie and Tiler acknowledge how their competitive drive enables them to put on a good show. “Every step is important, even the in between ones are even more,” Tiler says.

The final woman partaking in The Water Dancer is Brooklyn breakdancer and musician Casandra ‘Defy’ Rivera. Defy sheds light on the female presence in a male-dominated culture. On breakdance culture, she remarks, “It is male-dominated and it takes a lot of strength. Girls are intimidated by it.” Similarly, men dominate surfing, and both Stephanie and Casandraagree on the importance of being aggressive while keeping femininity in their movements.

Speaking to dancers from varying backgrounds, cultures andgenres of performance, Stephanie has achieved a unity between surfing and all forms of dance and movement. Both surfing and dance require determination, strength and creativity. The true essence of The Water Dancer is toteach women the importance of constantly seeking inspiration in all that you do.

Steph Gilmore was on fire at the Roxy Pro and had her first contest victory of the year.

Stephanie Gilmore (Gold Coast, AUS), 23, won the Roxy Pro in Biarritz, the charismatic champion clinching her first victory of the season ahead of freshly crowned 2011 ASP Women’s World Champion Carissa Moore (Oahu, HAW), 18, in good quality three-foot (one meter) waves and finding the only clean barrel of the event en route to victory.

With no pressure and having enjoyed the week of action where she posted three of the event’s top-five wave scores, Gilmore managed to take the final’s lead after a series of waves, the four-time ASP champion adding a 19th event win to her brilliant career with a solid 17.27 point heat result, the event’s third highest one.

“Today was unbelievable because so much has gone down, » Roxy Pro winner Gilmore said. « In my perfect world somebody would be crowned world champ and I would take the win and that is what I dreamt about. It feels so good. I missed it so much this year. I am so happy right now.”

Gilmore, who was ousted from the ASP Women’s World title race after event No. 5 in Brazil, came to Biarritz relaxed, bringing her stylish forehand attack, on-the-rail cutback and vertical top-turn lethal weapons to make her way through to the final and win the event, a win with a special taste ahead of wunderkid and favorite Moore.

“Her turns out there were really strong and I thought she was surfing better than me but I got a little head dip and it was the excitement of everything, » Gilmore added. « It feels good to beat her and she has definitely raised the bar for all the girls this year. She is definitely the strongest of everyone this whole year and she has been in every single final and that is a new record. To beat the freshly crowned world champ is pretty cool.”

Following her ASP Women’s world champion crowning, Carissa Moore (Oahu, HAW), 18, led the battle for fifteen minutes netting an 8.00 point score on her third wave thanks to her custom-made upside-down turns and 360° reverses. Showing great consistency and mental strenght during the nerve-racking world title showdown all week, Moore came short of only 1.77 points finishing her Biarritz run as runner-up.

« It’s been a great event and I was just smiling during the whole final, » an ecstatic Moore said. « It’s probably the heat I’ve spoken in most in my career and we were just enjoying our time out there with Stephanie. The waves were fun and I am just super stoked to be here in Biarritz. »

Surfing a sixth final in six events, a premiere in the ASP history, youngest ever ASP Women’s World champion Moore adds another record to her already outstanding young career and will be celebrating the first world title for a Hawaiian in 30 years, since Margo Oberg’s crowning in 1981.

« It feels amazing to make all these finals and win the title, » Moore said. « I have been thinking about this for a long time since I was a little girl. Just to be here right now and being world champ is pretty crazy, and Roxy put-up a great event. I dreamed of surfing at this level my whole life since I was a little kid and I don’t think you can ever expect or anticipate the feeling. »

Placing equal 3rd in the event and consequently letting go her chances to counter Moore’s world title assault, Sally Fitzgibbons (New South Wales, AUS) still added another solid result and continues the 2011 season as ASP World No. 2 and heading to the final event hungry for a win.

« It’s been a fantastic year, I’ve enjoyed the highs and lows but it’s a bit devastating to lose the world title, » Fitzgibbons said. « I am stoked to see my good friend Carissa (Moore) win the title and it was a great finish to see Steohanie take down the event win. There is still another event and I’ll try and finish there with a strong result.

Fitzgibbons, who was the last world title contender, remains one of women’s surfing favorites towards the supreme ASP crown in a near future, and contributed to making this year’s ASP Women’s World title race on eof the most exciting ever.

« It’s surfing and sometimes it’s difficult to won when world titles are on the line, » Fitzgibbons said. « I am stoked with my performance this year and can’t wait for next year. »

Securing her best result in her ASP Women’s World title rookie season, Pauline Ado (Hendaye, FRA) pleased her home crowds by reaching the Semifinals of the event, the 20-year-old mutli ASP European women’s champion continuing her 2011 run efficiently and now serioulsy in reach of requalifying for next year’s elite ASP Women’s tour.

« I would have loved to make the final but I am super happy with my result and it feels even better to secure it here at home, » Ado said. « I was really relaxed going into that heat and I knew I had nothing to lose against Carissa (Moore). The waves were good, I did my thing and I am happy with this run in Biarritz. Looking forward to the final event in California. »

By placing 3rd in Biarritz, Ado’s chances to requalify now depend on fellow rookie Laura Enever (USA) and Paige Hareb’s (NZL) results at the final event next month in California, both girls needing to make the final to keep Ado back from requalifying.

The Roxy Pro will continue tomorrow with the ASP Women’s World Longboard Tour division set to wrap-up, event officials meeting at 8 AM Saturday.

Steph talks about her roller coaster of a year after last year's attack...

Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 23, has had a rollercoaster of a year in 2011. After suffering from a tragic attack in December, the womens surfing icon has battled to recover from the physical and emotional pain caused from the assault that unfolded in front of her Gold Coast home while trying to maintain her status as the major spokesperson for professional womens surfing. Gilmore sat down with ESPN in an emotional interview for the first time since the incident to explain what her healing process has been like over the year. This is their story

On Dec. 26, 2010, Steph Gilmore was invincible. The then-22-year-old Australian known as Happy Gilmore had just been crowned ASP world champ for the fourth year in a row and was fresh off her third-straight Triple Crown title. She was weeks away from announcing a move to Quiksilver, where she would become teammates with 10-time world champ Kelly Slater and earn the richest contract in womens surf history: $5 million over five years. Her confidence and happiness were at all-time highs. On Dec. 27, her life changed. That day, Gilmore was attacked outside of her home in Coolangatta, New South Wales, Australia. For the first time, Gilmore opens up about the attack, surfing again and what its been like to have her invincibility tested:

A few days before the attack, a couple friends said to me, With everything going so well, you should think about moving to a more secure apartment. You never know whats around the corner. I was like, Oh, okay, maybe. That night, I was supposed to go to the movies with a friend, but there was a change of plans, so I turned around and went home. I am a firm believer that things happen for a reason. I have to walk through a public car park to get to my apartment and I noticed a guy I hadnt seen before. I didnt take much notice, but when I saw him a second time, we made eye contact. I got a gut feeling that wasnt cool with him. When I got to the stairs that lead to my apartment, I turned around and saw him sprinting at me with a metal bar in his hand and he hit me twice. The first time, he hit me in the head. I saw blood all over everything. I put my left wrist up to protect myself and the second hit snapped my ulna and tore ligaments in my wrist. I looked down and saw a big lump on my wrist. My body went into survival mode and, at the time, I didnt feel pain.

BARRA DA TIJUCA, Rio de Janeiro/Brazil (Monday, May 9, 2011) After a two-year hiatus, the worlds best female surfers will return to Brazil this week for Stop No. 5 of 7 on the 2011 ASP Womens World Title season, the Billabong Rio Pro.

Running from 12 to 16, 2011 and boasting a primary venue of Barra da Tijuca, the Billabong Rio Pro will return womens surfing to Rio de Janeiro during one of the most exciting seasons on record.

Carissa Moore (HAW), 18, current ASP Womens World No. 1, has been on an absolute rampage in 2011, making four Finals from four events and scalping two victories. The young Hawaiian holds a solid position as frontrunner at the moment, and has consistently put in mind-blowing performances across Australia and New Zealand during the opening half of the year.

Ive have had an amazing year so far, Moore said. To make four Finals from four events is a really good start for me and Im having a lot of fun. Everyone is surfing really well and Im feeling really pushed right now by all the girls like Coco (Ho), Tyler (Wright), Steph (Gilmore) and of course Sally (Fitzgibbons).

Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS), 20, current ASP Womens World No. 2, has had a breakout year of her own, making two Finals and collecting a well overdue inaugural victory at Bells Beach.

Ive had a pretty good run this season for sure, Fitzgibbons said. Im still buzzing off that Bells win and I probably will be for a while. Its been a whirlwind couple of weeks for me definitely the craziest of my life. Its a good race going on right now and Im focused on another solid result in Brazil.

Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 23, reigning four-time ASP Womens World Champion and current ASP Womens World No. 4, has shown flashes of brilliance this season, but has yet to make a Final since 2010. For the first time in her career, the iconic natural-footer faces the possibility of losing the ASP crown.

Its definitely now or never in terms of making a run at it this year, Gilmore said. Im sitting at fourth right now and havent cracked the Finals yet. Therere three more events and if Im going to make a move, it will have to start at this event. There are no easy heats on tour anymore, regardless of the round. Its an exciting time for womens surfing. Im looking forward to coming back to Rio and having some fun.

Silvana Lima (BRA), 26, current ASP Womens World No. 5, will lead the South American contingent at the Billabong Rio Pro, utilizing the passionate hometown crowd to her advantage.

Im very excited to be coming back to Brazil with the womens tour, Lima said. Rio is a very special place and the fans are very passionate about surfing. Its going to be exciting.

ABOVE: Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 23, reigning four-time ASP World Champion and defending Rip Curl Womens Pro Bells Beach winner, will look to regain her form when the 2011 ASP Womens World Title season recommences next week.

The worlds best female surfers are poised to return to the competitive singlet with the second stop on the 2011 ASP Womens World Title season, the Rip Curl Womens Pro Bells Beach presented by Ford Fiesta, from 19 25 April 2011.

With a fresh crop of talent injected into the ASP Top 17 over the past two seasons, this years ASP Womens World Title race is shaping up to be one of the most hotly contested on record.

Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 23, reigning four-time ASP Womens World Champion and defending Rip Curl Womens Pro Bells Beach winner, suffered an uncharacteristic Quarterfinal loss in the opening event of the season on the Gold Coast, relinquishing her ASP World No. 1 spot for the first time September of 2008.

The Gold Coast event was obviously a bit disappointing for me in terms of results but I felt like I wasnt at 100% so I was happy with the effort in finishing 5th, Gilmore said. I feel like my wrist is much stronger now and Ive been putting time in with my shaper and working on my equipment. Hopefully that will transfer to an improved performance at Bells.

A three-time past champion of the Rip Curl Womens Pro Bells Beach (2007, 2008, 2010), Gilmore is the event favorite and will look to utilize her stylish and powerful forehand assault on the Bells Beach righthand canvas.

I love the vibe down at Bells, Gilmore said. You never know what youre going to get in terms of waves and weather and I guess that keeps everything interesting. Ive had a good run there over the past few years and hopefully we can get some good surf there this season.

Gilmores campaign for a fifth consecutive ASP Womens World Title this year will be made much more difficult by current ASP Womens World No. 1 Carissa Moore (HAW), 18, perennial threat Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS), 20, lethal rookie Tyler Wright (AUS), 17, and the remainder of the ASP Top 17.

All the girls are ripping these days and there are no easy heats, Gilmore said. That much was apparent up on the Gold Coast and its an exciting time for womens surfing. The level is being pushed by everyone and Im just going to go out there and try to have fun.

Bethany Hamilton (HAW), 20, has been awarded the wildcard into the Rip Curl Womens Pro Bells Beach where shell tee off against one of the top seeds from the outset of competition.

This year especially, the Womens Top 17 has a lot of new, young girls who are driven and competitive, and who have so much talent that they are pushing the level of Womens surfing more and more, said Hamilton. Its really exciting to watch, therefore Im excited to compete at Bells!

The Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach presented by FORD will take place at Victorias pristine Bells Beach from April 19 30, 2011 and be webcast LIVE viawww.live.ripcurl.com and broadcast live on Fuel TV in Australia and ESPN in Brazil.

Running in conjunction with the womens event, the ASP Top 34 will contest the Rip Curl Pro presented by Ford Ranger.

After six, consecutive lay days, the Roxy Pro Gold Coast presented by Land Rover roared back to life with the worlds best female surfers contesting Rounds 2 and 3 in building surf at Snapper Rocks. Round 4 on tonight at about 9pm UK time.

SNAPPER ROCKS, Queensland/Australia (Saturday, March 5, 2011)

The opening stop of the 2011 ASP Womens World Title season, the Roxy Pro Gold Coast saw a return to form for reigning four-time ASP Womens World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 23, who bounced back after an uncharacteristic Round 1 loss to dispatch wildcard Sarah Mason (NZL), 16, in Round 2, before exacting revenge upon rookie gunslinger Tyler Wright (AUS), 16, in Round 3.

It was a hard heat, Gilmore said. It doesnt get any easier now, especially with them (Enever and Wright) and without the jet skis. It really tests the fitness of all of the girls. It boosted my confidence to win against Sarah Mason and I definitely wasnt expecting to surf against both Tyler and Laura in Round 3. It was tough.

Recovering from both an extended stay out of the lineup earlier this year and a surprise Round 1 loss, Gilmores performance today provided a much-needed rejuvenation for Australias golden girl.

I definitely feel some relief, Gilmore said. Its just such a giant mixed bag of emotions. There are nerves still because I made some mistakes in that last heat. I guess its learning again. Every year is like starting again and this year with the time off because of the injury I feel like Im starting at the back of the pack. Its cool though, I kind of enjoy that. Its something to work towards and its a good challenge.

Silvana Lima (BRA), 26, two-time ASP Womens World Runner-Up (2008, 2009), secured the days highest heat total, a 15.27 out of a possible 20, during her Round 3 bout against Pauline Ado (FRA), 20, and Sofia Mulanovich (PER), 27. The progressive Brazilian surfed with unparalleled speed and aggression, advancing directly to the Quarterfinals.

The conditions are really hard and I knew I had to hassle, Lima said. I felt confused about the waves, some were fat and I didnt know which ones to choose. I didnt want to lose, I feel like I always have to win. I got a few at the end, so Im happy to get through.

Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS), 20, 2010 ASP Womens World Runner-Up, continued her momentum-building Roxy Pro campaign today, besting opponents Coco Ho (HAW), 19, and Courtney Conlogue (USA), 18, in their Round 3 clash. Under the new ASP Womens World Title event format, Round 3 is a three-woman, non-elimination round with the winner advancing directly to the Quarterfinals and second and being relegated to Round 4.

Im pretty excited for the Quarterfinals, Fitzgibbons said. Theres this swell that is coming, and they will probably run the men in the best conditions seeing that they have the most competitors left, but there should be a little window for us to score some good conditions and get the Snapper we know it for.

Chelsea Hedges (AUS), 27, former ASP Womens World Champion (2005), capped off the days action with the highest single-wave score of the day, an 8.17 out of a possible 10, for a sensational backhand campaign on the biggest set of the day. The veteran campaigner is looking fit and dangerous as she moves into the business end of the Roxy Pro Gold Coast.

Laura Enever (AUS), 19, 2011 ASP Womens Top 17 rookie.

SNAPPER ROCKS, Queensland/Australia (Monday, March 6, 2011) ROUND 4

The swell has moved slightly East overnight and Snapper Rocks is beginning to take shape with clean three-to-four foot (1.5 metre) waves steaming down the point. The Roxy Pro Gold Coast will commence Round 4 of competition at 8am followed by the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast beginning Round 3 at approximately 10am local time.

The opening events of the 2011 ASP World Title season, the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro Gold Coast are moving into the business ends of competition, and with Snapper Rocks projected to fire for the remainder of the window, the worlds best surfers are poised to put on a show for the 2011 kickoff event.

We have improved conditions this morning with some really nice waves hugging the point, Richie Porta, ASP International Head Judge said. Were in a position now where we need to put in some long days to ensure the completion of both events so well be opening up this morning with the womens Round 4 at 8am followed immediately by mens Round 3 at around 10am.

Up first this morning will be the rookie clash between Pauline Ado (FRA), 20, and Tyler Wright (AUS), 16, in the first heat of Round 4.

The Roxy Pro Gold Coast will be webcast LIVE via http://www.roxypro.com.au

When mens competition resumes, up first will be former two-time ASP World Champion Mick Fanning (AUS), 29, up against progressive islander Dusty Payne (HAW), 22, in the opening heat of Round 3.

ROXY PRO presented by Land Rover

Defending Roxy Pro champion Stephanie Gilmores (Coolangatta, QLD) struggled to find a high scoring ride in her first appearance since being assaulted in Tweed Heads. The four-time world champion proved no match for rookie Tyler Wright (Lennox Head, NSW) today, who netted two of the rounds highest individual wave scores of an 8.93 and a 9.03 to easily defeat Gilmore and Roxy wildcard Sarah Mason. Twenty-three-year-old superstar Gilmore was clearly hindered by her lack of practice after being sidelined with a broken wrist since the attack last December.

I have had exceptional support throughout my career and I am excited to have this bright opportunity with the respected team at Quiksilver, says Gilmore. I am looking forward to pushing myself to new levels and feel this is a move which will help me stay inspired while competing at the highest level as a professional surfer on the ASP Womens World Tour. Its thrilling to be a part of an innovative and globally respected brand like Quiksilver. Its rich history and creative direction are well aligned with my personal ambitions.
