We've a lovely bright, funky Cover Up changing poncho towel to giveaway and make your car park change that much more pleasant!

Make your post surf car park change faff all the more pleasant with these cool Cover-Up towels.

Cover-Up was started by Suzanne Crawford who started to make poncho changing towels from beach towels for her surfing friends on the East Coast. “They were to help make those cold winter changes after surfing a little more bearable and to help us girls get out of our wetsuits easier in the beach car parks after those long summer surfs!” says Suzzane.

Cover-Ups are all made by hand on Suzanne’s old singer sewing machine in her small beach bungalow, on a cold windy cliff top in Yorkshire. Each towel has a huge cosy hood and wide arm holes for easy changing. Suzanne sources the towels from all over to make the Cover-Up’s in unique designs and bright colours, using nice quality velour toweling. This makes each design limited and new designs are added to the collection all the time.

Suzanne says, “I started making changing towels a couple of years ago just for my friends and they have just taken off from there. My boyfriend has a surf shop in Scarborough so I started to sell them there before opening an on-line shop about a year ago. I work as a fashion accessories designer as my day job and make my changing towels in my spare time. Sewing is a real passion for me and I love creating something that someone is going to enjoy using. It is so great to see someone at the beach using something that you have put lots of care into making. It makes me smile every time we see someone changing under one of our cosy cover-ups!”

‘Cover Up’s’ started life being sold in Suzanne’s local surf shop LowBrow in Scarborough, they now have an on-line shop www.coverupsurf.com and have sold world-wide to Australia, California, Europe and all over the UK.

We’ve a lovely Cover Up to giveaway, simply answer this question – what sort of car park changer are you? Do you let it all hang out or try to cover your modesty at all times?

The best answer wins the Cover Up. Competition ends on September 30th.

Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) flagship Sewage Alerts Service text message warnings kicked into action last weekend during heavy downpours at some of the most popular beaches in Wales and Southern England.

For the first time ever beach users were warned in real time during raw sewage discharges at popular beaches. SAS provided this vital water quality information FREE to beach users, surfers and watersports enthusiasts who had registered for SASs Sewage Alert Service text alerts. The information was also updated live on SASs online map at www.sas.org.uk for all to access. The system also notifies subscribers when discharges stop and advises against using the sea for the following 12 hours.

Going to press, no sewage is discharging at any of the beaches participating in SASs Sewage Alert Service, so we can say with certainty that these beaches are sewage free today! No news is definitely good news for the beaches involved in the Sewage Alert Service.

These essential Sewage Alert Service messages were issued at:

Manorbier (Wales)
Broadhavern (Wales)
Shanklin (IoW)
Poole
Poole Branksome Chine
Bournemouth Christchurch
Bournemouth Hengistbury
Bournemouth Pier
Boscombe Pier (home to the artificial surfing reef)
Western Super Mare
Even during rain many of these beaches are heavily used by surfers, windsurfers and other watersports enthusiasts, so this vital water quality information can help them best choose when to hit the water.

Raw sewage is discharged via Combine Sewer Overflows (CSOs) when the sewerage system is overloaded by rain, population pressures or ineffective sewerage infrastructure. This problem can be exacerbated after long dry spells as the ground is hard and not suited to absorbing rain. Thats exactly what happened last weekend with the first downpour in weeks.

SAS provided alerts at 10 beaches, thousands of CSOs around the UK would have been discharging raw sewage into our rivers and seas. We would strongly recommend using the beaches participating in our Sewage Alert Service, as only these beaches can provide you with real time information about sewage discharges. You can get a full list of the beaches taking part here.

You can sign up for the free real time Sewage Alert Service here or visit the SAS map to check on your nearest beach taking part in this pioneering public health project.

Alternatively text SAS (Beach Name) to 64446. Texts to 64446 are charged at your normal network rate and you can cancel by simply texting SAS Stop to 64446.

SAS Campaign Director says: Raw sewage does discharge onto our beaches and its a significant step forward for water companies to pass this information on. Sign up for real time sewage alert texts from SAS and you can choose how and when is best to use the sea.

2010 saw SAS turn 20 and it was one of their best years ever! SAS campaigner Alice Middleton reports.

In 2010 SAS’s campaigns were splashed over the front pages of The Sunday Times, featured in The Observer and starred in the UKs most watched current affairs TV programme to mention but a few. This momentum translated into significant campaign victories for surfers and waveriders all over the UK.

SAS has never rested on our laurels and we have big plans for all of our campaigns in 2011. But before we get ahead of ourselves, we thought it would be the perfect time to reflect on the highlights from the year that was 2010.

Sewage

We started 2010 with a classic SAS action confronting the water industry as they tried, once again, to exploit legal loopholes to allow them to continue to pump untreated sewage into the sea. On the doorsteps of the court, our campaign squad greeted the water companies, their rude barrister and the judges with a huge image of a CSO clogged with sanitary towels, condoms and much worse. Emblazoned above this powerful and shocking image was simply the word Appealing?

In August we successfully exposed over 30 of the UKs Blue Flag beaches because they couldnt provide beach users with warnings when raw sewage was in the sea. We were the lone voice calling for information after sewage discharges. In 1 day alone we conducted over 30 press interviews and this high profile pressure helped us secured a great campaign victory. From 2011, all UK Blue Flag beaches with Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs) must have systems in place to warn the public, in real time, when sewage is in the sea. This monumental campaign victory will help shape the future of public warnings about water quality.

Protect Our Waves

For the first time in the UK, waveriders and surfers have specific legislation to protect our waves, (surf spots, the surf itself and access to the surf). Our POW campaign resulted in recreational water users being awarded a seat on the regional planning partnerships within the Scottish Marine Bill. This gives surfers the appropriate platform to raise any concerns about impacts on our waves at the very earliest stage. We now have a bellowing mouthpiece, but we still need your eyes and ears on the ground, so be vigilant. Contact SAS with any information on waves under threat.

The Waves Are Resources (WAR) Report released this summer frames the intrinsic and economic value of waves.

The Waves Are Resources (WAR) Report released this summer frames the intrinsic and economic value of waves. To waveriders the values are obvious, but The WAR Report also details how and why waves should be recognised as valuable resources by non-surfers. Only once our precious waves true value to the whole community is understood, can we begin to ensure they are provided the level of protection they deserve. The WAR Report is being actively promoted to planners across the UK, at all levels of Government and compliments SASs credible body of scientific reports.

Marine Litter

On April the 1st SAS filed several reports of UFOs landing on our beaches. Unidentified Floating Objects! The new UFO campaign relies on your expertise and experience to identify persistent litter items found on our beaches. Once we have the object identified we can start to trace where it comes from and work with the industry to change their polluting practices.

The infamous and award winning Return To Offender campaign influenced one of the biggest companies in the world this year, Coca Cola agreed to meet all of the Return To Offender campaign demands. Persuading Coca Cola to reduce their packaging, invest in low impact materials, promote reuse and recycling and to support anti litter campaigns is a fantastic achievement.

However, Coke still need to improve, as they came out top on last weeks Christmastide action. During Christmastide, AKA the 12 days of Christmas, we identified the 12 companies whose products we find most frequently littering UK beaches. On each of the 12 days we sent each offending a company a beautiful, yet shocking, image of their products on a snow-covered beach. The contrast of these offending rubbish items resting on the pure white snow, with glimpses of yellow sand and the stunning blue Atlantic as the backdrop, will hopefully compel each company into subscribing to the Return To Offender campaign.

Beach Cleans & Volunteering

Our excellent regional reps have had an incredibly active 2010, starting with the Spring Beach Clean in March. SAS volunteers in their hundreds turned up to our Spring Beach Cleans all over the UK, but this was just the tip of the iceberg for our beach clean and volunteer programmes in 2010.

The 3rd annual SAS Makes Beaches Barefoot Friendly tour was another whirlwind tour of some of the UKs most popular beaches. Once again, with the help of the Barefoot Wine team, these events had a great community spirit. The reward for rolling your sleeves up and helping clean your precious beach was a tasty BBQ and cheeky wine tasting. This is one of the years highlights for the SAS team, we are able to make a real difference to a beach, meet a lot of like-minded people and have a fun, relaxed day. The good news is this tour will be dramatically expanded for 2011! Cheers to that!!!

In August the inspiring MotivOcean beach clean and surf experience tour exploded around the UK. This was our most ambitious beach clean and volunteer programme ever. And it was a resounding success! In the space of just 10 days over 1,000 of you turned up to help. The vast majority of the volunteers were the notoriously apathetic 16-25 year olds. MotivOcean Part II will be rolled out from January onwards. For more information on a MotivOcean event near you, email chris@sas.org.uk

Events

The UKs best Stand Up Paddleboarders (SUPs) crossed the Channel and along the way they raised over 8,000 for SAS and set a new World Record! Even with a near perfect sea state the event was incredibly gruelling and took a huge amount of dedication and determination.

There had been a lot of rumours that the Ball would make a comeback in our 20th anniversary. And on the first week of September super-heroes from all over the galaxy descended upon Porthtowan for the IncrediBALL!

With each passing year more and more threats to our precious coastal playgrounds are identified. This isnt demoralising to the SAS team, we use this as a motivator, powering our campaigns forward and ensuring they are even more impactful than ever. But as a small team we cant do this alone, we urgently need your support and engagement. We are looking forward to working with you again in 2011!

Hello folks and fellow bloggers. Sorry about my absence as your official SAS rep and updater. I’ve been a bit pants at getting online and spreading the good word of all the work we’re doing at SAS lately. The adventure officeat TYF this summer has gone totally bonkers and like most of you, I’vehadfriends, family and long lost cousins to visit from all over, theveggies are coming along great aside from theslug eaten cabbages:( andsince the surf’s been flat lately I’ve been out cycling around- Alas I am now online and wanted to update you on some news.

Did you all see SAS on national media last week with the Brown Flag campaign? Isn’t it shocking how our beach operatorshave claimed that they do tell us if there’s been a spill of raw sewage on our beaches yet I’ve never once seen a sign, never once heard on local radio and not once been made aware that there has been a risk of catching any number of skanky, nasty diseases like hepatitis A, Ecoli, thyphoid or meningitis. And more to the point – they don’t have the systems in place to know when there’s been a spill or not.

The SAS Spring Clean with Barefoot Wines was a great success a couple of weeks back and on the beach we cleaned up here (Newgale – which looks kinda clean) wecollected over 300kg of litter, which is a staggering amount considering we were only there for around an hour and a half. Next up is the Motivocean tour.

Surfers Against Sewage have teamed up with Quiksilver Foundation & myGames (powered by v), andwill be hitting the road with the biggest beach clean tour in our history. Since 1994, the volume of marine litter on UK beaches has increased by 146%* and SAS is helping combat this tide line of trash through its beach cleans and ongoing campaigns. Motivocean is SASs most ambitious beach clean tour to date and will be calling in at over 20 major UK beaches and waterside locations across the nation. to find out more you can drop a quick email to chris@sas.org.ukor check it out on their Facebook Page. Our beach clean will be at Newgale Beach NEXT WEDNESDAY (25th Aug) and we’re meeting at 1pm on the beach, if you live near by please come along- it would be great to meet you.

One last note before I get out for a wet and windy walk along the Pembrokeshire coast – the SAS Ball tickets are still available to buy here www.sasball.co.uk. see you there!!

SAS volunteering programme brings the magic of the 2012 Olympic Games to UK Beaches

This August,SASwill be promoting the link between coastal environmental protection and the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games through its eventMotivocean-Beach Clean & Sports Tour. SAS will be holding events right around the country between 20th 31stAugust, offering youth volunteers the chance to get involved with beach clean activities and then go surfing as a reward.

The mygames programme, launched today, calls on young people to undertake exciting volunteering projects in the community that promote and celebrate the values of the 2012 Olympic Games. Values that include friendship, respect, excellence, equality and determination.

Volunteers between 16-25 years old the opportunity to access and experience exciting sports, includingsurfing and some Olympic sports, by participating in the protection of the very environment that facilitates them our beaches & oceans. The sea and coastal environment are a vital component of so many sporting activities from sailing to surfing, windsurfing to volley ball, and through this initiative SAS aims to reinforce and build awareness, linking sport and protection of the environment.

Hugo Tagholm, Director of Surfers Against Sewage commented, Were delighted to be launching themygames programme, which will help volunteers develop their skills, while making a meaningful difference to the coastal environment. Youth volunteers will be involved in a range of activities through ourMotivocean Beach Clean & Sports Tourincluding protecting the UKs precious coastline. Theyll also get the chance to go surfing with us.

Surfers Against Sewageis now looking to recruit young volunteers for the project further information can be found by contacting Chris Ranford onchris@sas.org.ukor 01872 553 001, or by visitingvinspired.com.

So what better way to spend this weekend, than taking a lovely (summer eve) walk
to see the most glourious of sunsets that will soon be avaliable now…woop! or simply
grab your friends and light up a bbq on the beach, with plenty of chatter and the warmth
of the bbq to keep people toasty as the evening sets in.

Surfers Against Sewage went to London last week to collect the Coast award for the Best Marine Project which highlighted the success we've had with Operation Clean Sweep. SAS have been campaigning for years to try and reduce the number of those little plastic pellets known as mermaids tears from washing into the sea from the factories, so the award from Coast was very welcome. read on to find out more.

At the end of last week Andy and Hugoleft St Agnes for TheBig Smoke in their tidy dinner jackets and boardiesto collect an awardfor the Best Marine Project 2010. Three years ago SASidentified tiny plastic pellets known as mermaids tears, on beaches in abundance all over the UK and after tracing them back to their source, exposed the plastic factories as a source of this pollutant. Mermaids tearsare the raw material from which plastic products are made and can be a persistent problem in the environment.

In June 09 Operation Clean Sweep was set up to reduce the amount of mermaids tears washing from the factories into the drains- which ultimately end up at sea. The little plastic drops can only be seen when you look, but once you recognise one you see them in their thousands laying in the sandalong the tide line. Once in the sea, they can increase in toxicity as they adsorb aqua-phobic chemicals, carcinogen’s and PCBs, that can bio accumulate (work their way up the food chain). SAS are also concerned that they look like fish eggs and have been mistaken for food by the bigger fish- which can wind up on our plate for dinner, so could effect not only the natural environment but also our health.

Anyway, congratulations to Surfers Against Sewage for another very sucessful campaign.
