What to expect Africa – just the word conjures up images of adventure. To the surfer, Africa means Durban, Cape Town and one wave in particular: the princess of the south, Jeffrey’s Bay. A small town now surrounds the legendary wave that has become a Mecca for surfers around the globe.
When to go Best season: April- July, but there are waves all year round in Cape Town and Durban.
Where to surf Beginners should check out North Beach in Durban for plenty of fun peaks. Intermediates can head for the shelving waves of Ballito and the Umhlanga Rocks area. Advanced surfers should check out J-Bay. At its best J-Bay is all things to all surfers, a long wave with plenty of room for manoeuvres, tube riding and speed. Cold and often windy (from the storms needed to produce the optimum surf conditions) this is not the place to go to bask on the beach.
What will £20 buy you? The close proximity of the world renowned national wildlife parks, mean lounging around and sunbathing should be low on your list of priorities. £20 will pay for an unforgettable wildlife-checking day out.
