Number one selling music sensation, Colbie Caillat, and Australian pro surfer Ellie-jean Coffey made a unique new travelogue video diary which showcases the singer/songwriter’s recent trip to Tahiti.

Coffey shared her “favourite place on Earth” with the two-time Grammy winner who was in Polynesia to perform at the opening ceremony of one of the world’s most spectacular and revered sporting events, the Billabong Pro, Tahiti. Held each August, the Billabong Pro is set against Tahiti’s breathtaking natural backdrop and thousands of fans flock to watch the world’s best surfers try and tame the legendary break; Teahupo’o.

“It was a cool feeling to see how far music can travel. These people knew my music and were singing it back to me. It was really a nice feeling,” said Caillat.

Caillat and Coffey enjoyed ‘ringside’ seats at the tournament, positioned in boats just meters from the waves, and both ocean lovers jumped at the chance to confront another of their fears – swimming face-to-face with sharks in the waters off neighbouring island, Moorea.

The not-to-be-missed video diary can be seen on VEVO, the world’s leading all-premium music video and entertainment platform, and billabong.com from January 24.

The brilliant Maverick Sabre will be headlining the Princess Pavilion in Falmouth on Sunday 11 March.

Hackey born Maverick moved to New Ross, County Wexford in Ireland as a child, returning to London in later years to pursue his musical career.

2011 saw the rise of this British/Irish singer songwriter, rapper, soul and reggae fusion artist, a year which saw an appearance on Jools Holland, collaborations with Chase & Status (featured vocalist on Fire In Your Eyes’) and Pro Green. His debut single (which to many was this year’s summer anthem) ‘Let Me Go’ charted at no.16 and his follow up single the beautiful ‘I Need’ at no. 18.

Nominated for the prestigious ‘UK Breakthrough Artist’, 2011 has seen this hugely talented artist really come into his own.

This will be Maverick’s second show in Cornwall, after a stunning main stage performance at the Relentless Boardmasters earlier this year, and is part of an extensive UK tour to promote his debut album ‘Lonely Are The Brave’, due for release in February 2012.

This will be a joint promotion with what is surely now the firm favourite for touring bands in the UK, the Princess Pavilion. Together with SW1 they will be hosting a weekend of shows with Rizzle Kicks sell out show on Saturday 10th followed by the Maverick Sabre show on Sunday 11th – who said that big acts don’t come to Cornwall?!

Tickets are available from the venue box office 01326 211222 or from www.seetickets.com 0871 2200260 or from the Hall For Cornwall box office on 01872 262466 (all subject to booking fee).

Maldives: a video diary from Billabong Girls on Vimeo.

Here’s an interview we did earlier this year with singer, model and SurfGirl cover girl Catherine Clark.

Catherine, surfer or singer – which road are you travelling?
Singer! Surfing is amazing, but playing music is my passion.

Describe your songs to us?
Right now, my completed songs are kind of sweet little folk tunes. But I have big ideas for the songs I haven’t finished yet.

Does song writing come easily to you?
Yes, sometimes it’s more like I’m channelling someone else’s words than my own. It’s more through me, than of me. I never really think too much, it just comes out.

What makes you happy?
Playing music with friends, being in nature, writing poetry and going to music festivals!

Do you think there’s enough happiness in the world?
I think there is enough happiness in those that have chosen to be happy. I think once we realize that being happy is a choice, then there will be enough happiness in the world. I choose to be happy, even though some days it’s harder than others. It’s all about being gracious for the things you have, as opposed to being bitter for the things you don’t. Unhappiness is always rooted in one being uncomfortable with a certain situation, and their wanting it to be “better” or different. I find that once I take that certain moment for being what it is, and not try to fight it, it becomes much easier to deal with.

Does your environment help you create?
Always. And every environment helps you create something different. A beautiful natural place might make for a soothing song, but an uncomfortable place could make for something with a lot more emotion. But when it comes down to it, it’s your mindset more than anything that sets the mood of a song.

What do you think we should be doing to help our planet right now?
We should be putting bans on the production of plastic, and really hone in on recycling. Our government should be taking all of our taxes and putting it toward green technology, and school programs that teach you how to actually plant and maintain a garden. There is a certain spirit when one is immersed in nature, and it is completely disregarded by the western mindset. We need to find a way to not only coexist with nature, but once again be a part of it.

Does surfing inspire your songs?
No. Surfing is something I do to make my mind go blank, like meditation. Music is on a whole other level of thought. I immerse myself in emotion when playing music, actually quite the opposite of surfing.

What music are you into at the moment?
Adele, Mumford and Sons, and Florence and the Machine. I’m also really digging this local band called The Shoemaker Brothers. I’m also singing on Timmy Curran’s new album “Options”, which was a real honour because I love his music as well.

If you could be in any band which one would it be?
Probably Mumford and Sons. Their sound is so unbelievably powerful and emotional. I absolutely love it.

Which song would you like to have written?
Cosmic Love by Florence and the Machine. It is such a magically produced song, everything blends together perfectly.

Describe your perfect day
My perfect day would be hanging out at the Ranch and surfing all day. Just relaxing in the sun and getting waves. When it got dark I would be with all my friends playing music. I have had a few perfect days, I’m thankful for that.

Charlotte O’Connor Interview

Charlotte so when did you start singing?

I’ve always sung since I was about five and I took it seriously when I realised that I just loved it. At fifteen I started to play the guitar and then after that I started going to a music school and it just sort of progressed from there.

How would you describe your sound?

Acoustic soul, it’s quite funky as well. It’s upbeat, very honest and romantic.

Who are your musical influences?

The first person I ever went to see was Alicia Keys, I was thirteen and I just fell in love with her. I’ve grown up listening to James Taylor, John Martin, Johnny Mitchell, Garfunkel, Van Morrisson and people like that, so it’s a lot of folk-based music. With my Mum it was very much 70’s music like Aritha Franklin and Diana Ross. Freddy Mercury was a massive influence on me because I just love how he is on stage.

If you could choose any song, which one would you like to have written?

Bohemian Rhapsody!

What was the last album you downloaded?

The last album I downloaded was Bombay Bicycle Club. I’m into folk music mainly, but I like house music as well and a bit of disco. My music is influenced by acoustic folk rather than anything else but in the future I may delve into different things.

Do you like playing live and how often do you gig at the moment?

I absolutely love it! It’s a feeling that you couldn’t buy. At the moment it’s been a bit mad getting all of the artwork, album and video sorted but I have been gigging for quite a while.

Watch a little bit of Charlotte here, check her out if you get the chance, she’s got a great sound!

The first ever GyllyLive will be running on the 1st October, straddling the glorious beach and Gyllyngvase Cafe. Mixing music, poetry, performance and food, the day will be a mix of laid back folksy beach vibes, performance poetry and rock beats.

Falmouth’s music and culture scene is set to burst this autumn with the creation of GyllyLive, a full-day extravaganza mixing music, poetry, performance and food – all served up against the glorious backdrop of Gyllyngvase Beach.

The new cultural concoction has been created thanks to a collaboration between the renowned Gyllyngvase Beach Café, Barefoot Productions and Rolling Sixes and the collective has magicked up a line-up that mixes storming vocals with laidback, folksy beach vibes, performance poetry and dance beats that will continue well into the night.
GyllyLive daytime will take place in a marquee on the beach and the team behind the event has announced the following performers:

Phantom Limb – This band boasts Massive Attack vocalist Yolanda Quartey. With recent shows at SXSW and Glastonbury Festival, resulting in support dates with Candi Staton. All the band members have written, recorded or toured with multi-platinum selling artists. Phantom Limb’s influences are clear but subtle – Gillian Welch, Aretha Franklin, The Band, Etta James, The Staple Singers. Phantom Limb delicately conveys the same disarming honesty that only comes from singing about the truth.

Louis Eliot & the Embers – Bringing us choruses aplenty that soar high above the Cornish landscape, Louis Eliot’s very own rural sound with its mix of country, folk and an unshakeable pop sensibility never fails to rouse. Heralded by Vogue magazine as a “country troubadour” and the Times as a “true pop genius”, Louis and his band have recently played shows at Glastonbury, Cornbury, Maker, Secret Garden Party and the Port Eliot Festival. Louis Eliot is the former main man of 1990s Britpop Romantics, Rialto, who enjoyed three UK top 40 hits and a top 20 album.

The Loose Salute – Homespun, country-inflected ballads that straddle the line between folk and rock, the Loose Salute have been described as ‘a country-rock St Etienne (Guardian) Straight from the launch of their critically acclaimed second album “Getting Over Being Under”, The Loose Salute will bring their laidback west coast sound to Falmouth’s new festival.

Murray Lachlan Young – Known for his punchy wit, brooding subtext and occasional attacks of unaccompanied erotic folk song, Murray made his name as a writer performer in the rock clubs and underground cabaret venues of London in the mid 1990s. His unique blend of dark satirical stand-up verse and prose shot to fame in 1996 when, signing to EMI, he became the first ever poet and spoken word performer to be given a £1 million record deal. Now a resident poet on 6 music and Radio 4, Murray’s genius wordplay, mesmerising alliteration and dynamic delivery captivates audiences from the moment he takes to the stage.

The line-up is also peppered with a range of local artists who are developing their own cult followings. Warming up the evenings will be Kola, a folk collective from this season’s September Festival and Relentless, energetic rock and rolling youngsters who were the runners-up at the recent Mabefest Battle of the Bands. By popular demand Falmouth’s Ice Cold Idiots will also be appearing, fresh from a festival tour with The Vproject and performances at Camp Bestival, Green Man and Port Eliot.

After 11pm Gyllylive will move inside the Gyllyngvase Beach Cafe with DJ Robin Parris creating a soulful mix of modern funk, break beat and electric house at the after party until 2am.

Simon Daw of Gylly Beach Cafe says, “Gylly is just the most magical location and we’ve been really keen to create a cool showcase event for some time now.

It’s going to be a perfect day and night for simply hanging out down here and soaking up the beats and the atmosphere – as well as filling-up with a whole host of scrummy food from our eclectic menu. We’ve purposefully kept the price right down for this inaugural event to ensure it’s amazing value for money for people too.”

Limited tickets are on sale now for ONLY £10.00 from the event website www.gyllylive.net or the Gylly Beach Cafe
