Francesca Bingley meets the head designer of Indah, who is inspired by the colours of Bali.

Beautiful handcrafted fabrics are laid out in the hot Balinese rooms of Indah’s factory, as head designer Libby examines the prints. Metres of soft turquoise and purples are checked before patterns are cut and the Balinese inspired beachwear is created. Welcome to Indah’s hands on approach to designing.

Whilst making the most of my time in Bali, I visited the offices and factory of beach clothing company Indah. The company was set up by Hawaiian/Californian husband and wife team Libby and Joe in 1998 in the pursuit of a life in Bali. Libby is the head designer and creates four to six collections a year that sell in the United States, Japan and Europe. Over the past 12 years the company has grown enormously from its humble beginnings, when it just made yoga clothes, to the custom built factory that now sees thousands of garments handmade each year.

‘Indah’ is a popular Indonesian word meaning ‘beautiful’ and symbolizes what the company is all about. Libby is obsessed with how the hands on approach can transform designing and creation into a beautiful finished product. She never studied or chose to become a fashion designer, but her passion and enthusiasm for style and colour led her to find a way to create unique pieces in Bali that are increasingly popular around the world.

Watching her work is fascinating. She switches between rapid fire Indonesian, and English with her Hawaiian accent, pulling out fabrics, swatches and checking colours continuously. Everything has to be tactile and flattering, as Indah’s clothes are all about being sensual, floaty, and perfect for the beach or warm nights out. She hand draws prints, gets involved with the Batik printing, and hand mixes the dyes for acres of fabrics. She is like a colourful whirlwind as she flies from fabric, to designing, to checking the final garments.

Every piece that Indah makes is unique as the fabrics are hand painted. If there is a flaw in the silk painted dress then it’s because it makes it more beautiful as it’s a one of a kind piece that was handmade in Bali. The techniques used to create the fabrics are timeless yet temperamental. The dyes used are water based and are affected by the weather. So if the sun is really strong during Bali’s dry season, then as the dye dries the colours intensify. However, if it is hot and humid in the wet season, the colours can appear softly muted or cloudy. Indah’s philosophy is to keep alive the traditional techniques that the Balinese have used for centuries, so the prints themselves reflect a history of Balinese artistry.

Libby is always looking for new inspiration from the colours of Bali, and each collection is birthed from her love of colour moods which creep up on her. Her life is in Bali, so naturally the collections are always mood-lifting and exotic.

Take a look at the website, www.indahclothing.com/ to get a real taste of Indah’s Balinese colour injection.

We've a lovely bright, funky Cover Up changing poncho towel to giveaway and make your car park change that much more pleasant!

Make your post surf car park change faff all the more pleasant with these cool Cover-Up towels.

Cover-Up was started by Suzanne Crawford who started to make poncho changing towels from beach towels for her surfing friends on the East Coast. “They were to help make those cold winter changes after surfing a little more bearable and to help us girls get out of our wetsuits easier in the beach car parks after those long summer surfs!” says Suzzane.

Cover-Ups are all made by hand on Suzanne’s old singer sewing machine in her small beach bungalow, on a cold windy cliff top in Yorkshire. Each towel has a huge cosy hood and wide arm holes for easy changing. Suzanne sources the towels from all over to make the Cover-Up’s in unique designs and bright colours, using nice quality velour toweling. This makes each design limited and new designs are added to the collection all the time.

Suzanne says, “I started making changing towels a couple of years ago just for my friends and they have just taken off from there. My boyfriend has a surf shop in Scarborough so I started to sell them there before opening an on-line shop about a year ago. I work as a fashion accessories designer as my day job and make my changing towels in my spare time. Sewing is a real passion for me and I love creating something that someone is going to enjoy using. It is so great to see someone at the beach using something that you have put lots of care into making. It makes me smile every time we see someone changing under one of our cosy cover-ups!”

‘Cover Up’s’ started life being sold in Suzanne’s local surf shop LowBrow in Scarborough, they now have an on-line shop www.coverupsurf.com and have sold world-wide to Australia, California, Europe and all over the UK.

We’ve a lovely Cover Up to giveaway, simply answer this question – what sort of car park changer are you? Do you let it all hang out or try to cover your modesty at all times?

The best answer wins the Cover Up. Competition ends on September 30th.

After Greenpeace's 'Dirty Laundry' report, Adidas join Nike and Puma in detoxing their supply chain.

Adidas, the world’s second largest sportswear brand, has responded to the Greenpeace ‘Detox’ challenge by committing to zero discharge of hazardous chemicals throughout its entire supply chain and across the entire lifecycle of its products, by 2020.

The commitment comes just seven weeks after the publication of the Greenpeace report, “Dirty Laundry”, which revealed commercial links between major clothing brands, including Adidas, Nike and Puma, and suppliers responsible for releasing toxic pollution into Chinese rivers. The follow-up product testing report, released last week, “Dirty Laundry II – Hung out to dry” provided further evidence that chemicals capable of breaking down into persistent, bioaccumulative, and hormone-disrupting substances, such as nonylphenol (NP), were being used during the manufacturing processes of over 14 international brands, including H&M and Abercrombie and Fitch.

“Adidas’ commitment to zero discharges shows it recognises that there are no ‘safe limits’ and that only total elimination of hazardous chemicals from its supply chain is acceptable. This is great news for our environment, our rivers and the millions of people in China and elsewhere who depend on waterways for their livelihoods” said Yifang Li, Greenpeace East Asia Toxic Campaigner.

“The road towards zero discharge is a long one and while Nike, Adidas and Puma are now competing and collaborating in the race towards a toxic-free future, it is urgent that they turn words into actions and provide concrete and ambitious implementation plans and begin making real changes on the ground,” continued Li.

As part of its commitment, Adidas has included some very specific and immediate actions, including a NPE phase-out map based on a ‘no safe levels’ approach, and a commitment to work with all levels of their supply chain. Adidas has also agreed to address the principle of the “right to know” by ensuring full transparency about the chemicals being released from its suppliers’ factories (8). It has explicitly stated its commitment to developing a cross-industry approach in addition to its own individual implementation plan. Adidas has promised to deliver a detailed plan within the next seven weeks.

“Now the market leaders have blazed a trail for the industry to follow, we’ll be making sure the pack maintain the pace as they race towards zero. All around the world, the consumers of both their products and their pollution deserve nothing less than full transparency and a total detox,” added Greenpeace UK campaigner Tamara Stark.

Following the release of the Dirty Laundry reports it appears that “Detoxing” is back in fashion, with a number of other clothing brands publicly engaging in the “Detox” challenge, including Lacoste, G-Star Raw, Uniqlo and Chinese sports brand Li Ning.

Greenpeace will be talking with all of these brands in the coming weeks to turn their initial engagement into strong individual commitments for a toxic-free future.

Greenpeace is an independent global campaigning organisation that acts to change attitudes and behaviour, to protect and conserve the environment and to promote peace. Greenpeace is campaigning to stop industrial pollution of our water with hazardous, persistent and hormone-disrupting chemicals by demanding that companies and governments take action to “Detox” our future.
