Corinne Evans celebrates coaching success
Corrine Evans, from Newquay, Cornwall, has single-handedly coached a range of women and girls aged eight to 60+, from all over the country.

Launching her girls’ days two years ago, Evans started with one girls’ day in 2010, increasing to two in 2011, and this year she hosted six girls’ surfing days, two for women (at locations in Cornwall, Devon and Wales), and a women’s surfing week in France.
Corinne started surfing at 12 when she moved to Cornwall, and since 2010 has been working as an ambassador for women’s surfing.
Corinne says: “As a youngster I saw so few other girls on the beach to look up to. I wanted to change this for the next generation of surfers so they can see surfing as a real option for girls, and have a healthy role model to aspire to. I am delighted to have worked with so many female surfers in 2012; it gives me a real buzz to see them enjoying surfing and to want to get out in the sea more often.”
The primary aim of her surfing days is to get more women and girls excited about surfing – giving them a taster of the sport and helping to prove to them that keeping fit can be fun.

Coaching a range of abilities and confidence levels, Evans has also had to incorporate strategies to help some girls overcome their fears of the ocean.
Corinne says: “I believe that fear is something you have to overcome, and I know the girls who come to my days really want to achieve something. They might take a few sets on the head and get wiped out, but then they’ll realise it’s never as bad as they imagine!”
Not only does Corinne help to get complete beginners in the water, she also coaches some aspiring young talent so has to adapt to coaching a range of abilities.
Evans says: “For me there is no better feeling than watching someone stand up for the first time, catch their first green wave or do their first turn. There are always a few stand outs, and I often think to myself, ‘could I be coaching a future English Champion?’”

Corinne is planning an extensive programme for 2013, with around 14 dates for girls’ and women’s days and some special days including mother and daughter sessions.
