The Billabong XXL Awards is a groundbreaking contest (often referred to as the Oscars of big wave surfing) which honors the brave watermen and women who have taken on the greatest waves of the last year at any break anywhere in the world, based on the photographic evidence. The 2011 Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards feature an array of categories including the $50,000 Ride of the Year, Monster Paddle, Monster Tube and the Verizon Wireless Wipeout of the Year. There are also “world champ” awards for the Surfline Best Overall Performance (male) and the Billabong Girls Best Performance (female). The event features over $130,000 in cash prizes for the surfers and photographers who are honored at a gala awards function in Southern California each April.
Ireland’s Mullaghmore Head, a Teahupoo-esque left-breaking cold-water slab, delivered a bounty of huge barrels just in time for the Billabong/Monster Tow In contest on February 14. And some of the 30 to 40 foot tubes ridden that day may figure well into the Monster Tube and Ride of the Year divisions of the XXL event.
Easkey Britton was on the case with her cousin and tow partner Neil Britton, when a run of big swells hit Ireland’s west coast in early February and she surfed some proper big waves. One of her rides was entered into the Billabong XXL Awards. Easkey is the first Irish woman to be have an entry in the Awards, and by doing so she’s pushing big wave riding in Ireland and women’s surfing in general. A true pioneer of the sport.
Here’s the big wave clip of Easkey, the Irish Entry for Billabong XXL. Read Easkey’s story in full in next issue of SurfGirl out on April 1st.
