Sarah Beardmore is a fiercely talented Aussie/Brit surfer with a penchant for partying and a dab hand at painting. Best mates with pro surfers Rebecca Woods and Sofia Mulanovich, Sarah now rides for Britain. Will she be the first British surfer on the World Championship Tour? Kat Dawes went for a surf with her to find out more about the exuberant Ms Beardmore.
Fave film? Good Will Hunting. Actually…I saw a funny Kiwi movie called Eagle vs Shark the other day and that’s my new favourite.
Fave TV show? Dexter.
What’s on your iPod? Um I don’t actually own an iPod. Is that weird? My friends think I am weird. I say it sometimes distracts me…but they just say I like the sound of my own voice. I do like music but I just don’t own any.
What amps you for a surf? Friends and the sun.
What‚Äôs your most overused word? ¬†Mine… Well in Jersey the girls taught me the game, if you say the word mine you have to do 20 push-ups and I realised how crap I was when I kept getting told to drop. Sophie Hellyer‚Äôs fave word is mine too. I bet after this I will have to owe the girls 60!
Hottest male WCT surfer? Bonjour Michel Bourez.
Fave meal? I like a feta, pine nut and parmesan salad with half a dozen oysters and a glass of white wine.
How many boards in your quiver? I have a few I am trying at the moment but usually in my quiver I aim to have five boards of different sizes for when the waves vary.
Fave surf break? Macaronis, Indonesia.
Fave country? Peru.
Sambuca shots or beer? Beer and then sambuca shots! I like lighting the sambuca in your mouth and then pretending to be a ferocious Welsh dragon (even though I am not Welsh).
Foreign languages? I wish…I did Japanese at high school but all I remember is the words to heads, shoulders, knees and toes.
Handbag or rucksack? Handbag when I go out, rucksack when I travel.
Best travel tip? When you’re flying and get charged excess or think you may do then pull your wetsuits or jackets out of your board bag while it is getting weighed. Then put them back in again when you have to take it to over-sized luggage. It works a treat, I just did it on the way to Oz and saved myself a couple of hundred quid!
Your New Year’s resolution? To come home after a night out with no bruises from silly dancing.
Since we spoke to you, you’ve scored a sponsor! Who are they and how much do you love them?! Yeah, I got sponsored by Protest! So stoked to have joined forces with them. I’m so happy they are supporting me and I am looking forward to representing them in the British events and internationally on the World Qualifying Series. They originated in Holland and have made quite a presence in Europe (including the UK) over recent years which is great because their clothes are fab!
How did you go in the Jersey comp? I made the final but seemed to be chasing a headless chook the whole heat. I couldn’t find a wave to save my life! Finished fourth, just like England placed! The English team were in luxury for the week though — camping. It was such a fun comp though, I had a ball playing conkers while the rest of the teams were in their spas and saunas.
Have you been anywhere cool recently? Yeah, I am Down Under at the moment, finishing off a long year with some surf and sun! I went to Western Australia last week as I was bridesmaid for a friend’s wedding and it was amazing!
How have you been enjoying the UK surf in the last couple of months – pretty good autumn hey?! Yeah, I was kind of on the move a bit, spent some time in Cornwall, London and Poole which was cool (hey that rhymed). But got a few good days in Newquay and a few other spots up and down the coast with a bit more size.
Been to any new spots, surfed with any new peeps? In between travelling in England I went over to watch the girls in the WCT event in Peniche, Portugal. Bec Woods and I drove up to France for some waves and cheese and came back down through Mundaka, Spain, which we scored fun. Met up with Jo Dennison and her boyfriend Dean and had a couple of surfs with them. I have had a ball hanging out and surfing with all the UK girls, they are brilliant!
